The Minnetonka City Council recently adopted a social host ordinance, which became effective June 26, 2009. The purpose of the ordinance is to discourage underage consumption of alcoholic beverages by making the host of an underage drinking party criminally responsible. A violation of the ordinance is a misdemeanor.

On June 2, 2009, Minnetonka police officers handed out more than 300 bags of LifeSavers with the message “Seatbelts are LifeSavers: Buckle up!!!” to Hopkins High School students as they exited the school parking lot. Two days later, on June 4, 2009, Minnetonka police officers delivered a similar message to Minnetonka High School students using Nestle Crunch bars with the following message attached: “Click It or ticket—to avoid the crunch.”

Since the installation in June of life jacket loaner stations at Gray’s Bay Marina in Minnetonka, Maxwell Bay in Orono and Spring Park Bay in Spring Park, program sponsor Safe Kids Northwest Metro Minneapolis estimates that life jackets have been borrowed 37 times between the three sites.
